Top tips for gaining and demonstrating commercial awareness.

• Look at the BBC News website. This is good for following the development of news items and enables you to research related stories.
• Follow the same story in a number of different publications to get the complete picture.
• Scan the Financial Times and/or the finance and business pages of the Economist. For those who are a little daunted by reading the FT, the business pages of The Times are good and often easier to understand.
• Choose stories that interest you. It’s much easier to talk about something that has grabbed your attention.

• Know why you want to be a City lawyer.
• Consider what makes a great City lawyer and whether you have the potential to develop these qualities.
• Think about the reasons why a prestigious client will appoint a firm such as Hogan Lovells.
• Think about how the role of the lawyer and the legal profession may change over your career.
