During the summer of 2007, I spent three weeks at Hogan Lovells on a vacation scheme. I had already completed two at other firms but instantly knew that Hogan Lovells was the firm that I wanted to train at. Not only was the work incredibly interesting, everyone from partner level down was genuinely enthusiastic about the work they completed. I always knew that I wanted to work somewhere where the work was engaging and the people were more than just colleagues. So far, Hogan Lovells has more than lived up to my expectations.
After completing my law degree and LPC I took a year off and went travelling; which I would recommend to anyone. I think it is important to meet new people and get an insight into different cultures as it makes you a more rounded individual and changes your approach to life and work for the better.
I spent my first seat in the Banking department and had the opportunity to work for some very high profile clients. The work was challenging and varied and, as my knowledge of the practice area increased, so did my responsibility.
I am now in my second seat and sitting in Corporate (specifically the Private Equity team) and really enjoying it. I was made to feel extremely welcome and my views are often sought with regard to the deals I am working on. Highlights so far would include being sent to Sweden, as well as being trusted to be seconded to a client for a few days.
Hogan Lovells is a great place to work; the training is second to none and you are treated as part of the team from day one. The practice is extremely large and allows you to experience many areas of law at the highest level.
My advice to people applying for training contracts would be to try to find a firm where you like the culture and work ethic. If you can experience this first hand through open days or vacation schemes then so much the better.
