Although I grew up in Germany, I decided to study law in England with the hope of eventually pursuing an international career. Various internships during university convinced me I wanted to become a solicitor. I found that I enjoyed the challenge of applying legal principles to complex problems, and the opportunities for international client work that such a career entailed. As I was particularly eager to utilise my language skills, I decided to try for a place at an international firm in the City.
Choosing the right firm can be very difficult. During my time at university, Hogan Lovells sponsored my college’s law society dinners and sent trainees to represent the firm at those events. It was because of these contacts and the impression I gleaned of the firm that I applied for a vacation scheme. The scheme itself was extremely enjoyable. The partners went to great lengths to involve me in serious work, and everyone was welcoming and supportive.
I was fortunate to gain a training contract with the firm, beginning in September 2010 (in between I studied for a diploma in Art History at the Courtauld Institute and worked as a tour guide in Rome). My first seat was in Insolvency, where I was involved in several large transactions. For my second seat I have moved to IP, where I’m currently involved in a potential patent litigation. I am enjoying the increased opportunity for client contact that IP offers. I regularly sit in on conference calls and meetings with clients and potential expert witnesses. My third seat will be in Brussels.
I have also found plenty of time to enjoy myself at the firm. I recently organised a German wine-tasting event for the IP department at the suggestion of one of the partners. Although everyone is expected to work hard, there is a great culture within the office. Everyone is approachable, people socialise with each other, and dress down Friday is always something to look forward to.
