I gained an interest in the legal profession fairly early on in my university studies. On top of the core LLB subjects I took courses such as Legal Systems of Asia and Africa as part of my degree, and having studied the interplay between established western legal systems and laws of the emerging world, I knew I wanted to work in a firm where I would be exposed to international work. It was really difficult to distinguish between the top City firms and I attended several open days and law fairs which helped me build a more comprehensive profile of the firms.
Since joining Hogan Lovells, I have noticed that it invests a lot in its trainees. To help prepare you for the work that’s in store, there are various talks and training sessions relevant for the seat you are in. There is a good structure to the training contract here, so every trainee is guaranteed a decent level of experience. Despite the structured nature, you have a say in shaping your training contract. You will have the opportunity to work in four of our numerous departments as well as international secondment opportunities and client secondments.
I’ve already discovered that at Hogan Lovells, you can work for well-established, global clients whilst working in a supportive environment. However, the people here don’t take your work for granted and are always grateful for your input. Further, the firm is truly committed to recruiting high calibre students regardless of background. Being an international student, visa issues were an unavoidable reality but the firm has been great and I have had support prior to joining the firm.
