Be yourself at work. Master law, business, entrepreneurship. Grow as a person, as well as a professional. Whether it's day one, week two or year twelve, world-class training and early responsibility will accelerate your development. Being surrounded by experts will hone your skills and instincts. As you progress, you'll share your knowledge with those new to the firm and invest time in helping them develop too. Just like the partners and associates who'll have encouraged and coached you.
The direction you go in is up to you: take the initiative and steer your own path. We're highly focused on personal growth throughout Hogan Lovells. So we'll want you to carry on building your legal expertise, practice knowledge, personal effectiveness and business skills - and we'll give you all the tools you need to do so.
The figures first. We have some 2,600 lawyers in over 48 offices in 26 countries across North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australasia. Notably, we’re the only law firm with strength and depth in both the United States and Europe, the two major markets for legal services.
Collaboration between these offices is part of our everyday life. In fact, we see ourselves as a global community – one energised by the trust we have in each other. Every time we use our collective expertise, that trust is reinforced – and that’s how we’re able to deliver so consistently and seamlessly across borders.
So you’re likely to work with fellow trainees and colleagues from different continents during your training. You’ll do work for major global enterprises on some of the most exciting legal projects around. Plus you’ll tap into, and add to, our ‘sharing economy’ where knowledge and unique points of view are valuable currency. Every contribution you make will earn you respect and recognition.
Only a few international law firms are capable of handling the absorbing and complex legal work that crosses continents. We’re one of them. In your second year, you’ll have the chance to spend six months abroad. It’s not compulsory though, so if you’d prefer to stay based at our London office, you can. Currently we have trainees on secondment in Brussels, Dubai, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, New York, Paris, Singapore and Washington D.C.
Individuality may be core to our firm – but we still have a great deal in common. Everyone who works here is smart, driven and open-minded. All of us are committed to engaging with one another, with our clients and with wider society. It’s the foundation of our culture. It’s also our business model.
We also believe it's one of our biggest distinguishing features. Here's what that culture involves:
Trust plays a big role in the way we work together. Rather than shelter you from the cut and thrust of complex client work, we'll trust you to handle your share of it. It means you'll learn faster and feel more empowered. Plus you'll be surrounded by colleagues you can count on and expert advice you can rely on. That includes contact with senior partners to a degree unheard of in some major law firms. The result is a stimulating atmosphere full of opportunities to combine ideas.
We don't want you to become a clone of anyone else in the firm. Quite the opposite. We believe – and we've proved – that diversity of thinking ultimately leads to better results for clients. A full spectrum of backgrounds, experiences and opinions is one of our biggest strengths. That's why we work hard to make sure individuality thrives here. You can be true to yourself, confident that your colleagues accept you for who you are.
In the London office we've set up multicultural, Pride (LGBT), working families, disability and wellbeing, and women's networks.
We're united even further by our shared belief in a common set of values:
Expertise is powerful – and much more so when it's combined. By working together, exchanging views and pooling our know-how, we regularly come up with inspired ways to solve client problems. Our approach builds on already strong client relationships and deepens them even further.
This means investing in our people, promoting diversity and giving back to our communities. We embrace ethical business practices and sustainability. We champion fairness too, and are a world leader in advancing social justice and the rule of law by providing legal services at no cost. For instance, we're dedicating 56,000 hours of volunteer time in more than 30 countries and will donate at least US$1 Million through 2018 to support girls' and women's equality worldwide
"What sets Hogan Lovells apart from other law firms is its genuine commitment to diversity and inclusion. I’m a member of the steering committee for the firm’s multicultural network which won the Black Solicitors Network 'Outstanding Multicultural/BAME Employee Network' award."Lookman Rawat, Associate
