As a trainee, I’m learning how to be a practising lawyer. I’m involved in every process, from coordinating to drafting documents or legal advice and interacting directly with clients, and I get to train through real work.

Growing up, I knew I wanted to work in an intellectually challenging, constantly evolving field and I was fascinated by the way in which the law seemed to be relevant to absolutely everything I could think of. One of the things I enjoy most about Hogan Lovells is that everyone is encouraged to bring in their life or work experiences into each matter in order to think outside the box.

For example, in my current seat, I frequently work on multijurisdictional reviews which require input from colleagues in other offices across the globe and even other firms. By taking advice from people who truly understand their jurisdictions, whether through language skills, personal background or legal practice, you go beyond just scratching the surface of a legal issue.

Technology is becoming increasingly important in the legal profession. Some changes have been steadily happening, like legal software for document comparisons or modern e-filing systems. Other changes came out of necessity, and the events of the past year have certainly changed the legal profession’s reliance on technology. I was part of the first trainee cohort to start entirely virtually during the Covid-19 pandemic and technology was the sole reason why it was still possible for trainees to join the firm seamlessly from home.

Diana Suciu, Trainee at Hogan Lovells
As an Associate, I help firms that provide financial services and products to comply with the laws and regulations that apply to their business. This mainly involves providing them with legal advice and guidance from a regulatory perspective.

The main reason I chose Hogan Lovells was because I was keen to work in an environment where I would get to do high-profile work with well-known clients, but also to work alongside colleagues who are intelligent, supportive and friendly.

The thing that surprised me most was just how many support options were available to me as a junior lawyer at the firm (a PA, a supervisor, a partner mentor, and a trainee buddy, to name a few). You could tell that the firm was keen to make sure we always had someone to go to for help when we needed it.

The best thing about working at Hogan Lovells is that even though it’s over two years since I qualified, I can see how the firm has invested in, and continued to support me in my development as a lawyer. It’s a great feeling knowing that I am still learning and being challenged in my work.

The firm has a broad and intensive personal development training programme which was really helpful to me, especially as a junior associate. This included training on things like "making an impact" and "networking" which are skills that are often overlooked but are very useful when you start out in your legal career.

We are constantly encouraged to sign up for different internal and external legal and regulatory training at the firm to ensure we are fully equipped with the knowledge we need to advise our clients.

Nikki Ogun, Associate at Hogan Lovells
I started my career as a trainee at the firm over twenty years ago. I first applied to Hogan Lovells because I knew it was a top-tier law firm, with a stellar client base and a reputation for providing a strongly collaborative environment. All of which are still true today and what make it such a great place to work.

The firm makes a huge investment in its people – which starts when you join as a trainee and continues throughout your career. That support isn’t just to develop technical legal skills, but also the other skills necessary to be successful, and reflect the changing nature of your career as you become more senior.

Technology continues to change the way in which we provide cost-effective legal services to clients.  How we work and communicate with each other now is very different to the way we worked 20 years ago when I was a trainee – and for the better. We work more closely now with our clients than ever before, enabling us to build better relationships and be more effective advisers.

As a firm we’re constantly looking at the way we provide legal services, and leading the way on developing technologies and innovating client services. But we’ll always need bright, ambitious individuals to drive that innovation.

Diversity & Inclusion

Defined by difference, united by shared beliefs

Inclusion is at the heart of our culture. We can only deliver exceptional work when we support each other to be who we are and bring our strengths to what we do. Everyone here is defined by difference. We celebrate what makes each of us who we are and are united by a shared commitment to empower each other to do so. These aren’t just words on a page, they are values that guide every one of our interactions with everyone we work with and for.
